“Concretions” is a series of oil paintings that investigates the concept of sedimentation. The forms depicted recall hybrid fossils: residual presences, suspended and trapped within the pictorial space, as if they had emerged only to be submerged once again by colour.
The works are created through a slow, layered process. The canvases, painted horizontally, are built up through successive layers of colour, alternated with long drying times. This extended rhythm makes time an integral part of the work.
During the pauses between one phase and the next, external agents such as dust settle on the still-fresh surface, altering the pictorial texture. Time and environment thus become active elements, directly contributing to the definition of the final work.
Federico Catagnoli explores the theme of place through an aesthetic of estrangement. Through sculpture, painting, and alternative printmaking techniques, he constructs landscapes that seem to belong to a parallel dimension, where forms and presences emerge in silent ambiguity. These spaces, suspended between being and appearance, become metaphors for an uncertain search for identity, immersed in a fragmented and ever-changing contemporaneity.
