The birch barks, originally very light in color, served as a mimetic refuge for moths. By absorbing fine particles dispersed in the atmosphere, they first darkened, and then, when pollution from mining districts ceased to be persistent, they returned to being light again.

Sound Art

Birch Trees give up their sight to save the Biston Betularia, a moth forced to undergo metamorphosis due to human pollution activities.

Brutal metamorphosis

Not far from a mining district, Birch Trees observed with their many awake eyes in a hitherto unprecedented haze, unknown dark vapors emanating from deep excavations in the ground where men and women seemed to work frantically.
Night by night and day by day, glowing incandescently with the fires of large machinery, the air became increasingly caliginous.
The bark of the trees turned ashy, their eyes growing wearier, and some of the dearest guests to the Birches, the Moths, also began to change their appearance. Like a metamorphosis attacked by a terrible spell, on their wings at first whitish in color with light gray discolorations, very dark veins tending to black began to branch out, quite abnormal for that species.
Together with bright Lichens, the Moths delicately covered the barks, blending together until they became almost a single body, different lives merging in their appearance, sewing themselves together to become a blanket for the Birches…
